The project targeted 5 schools in Burhakaba that were in dire need of teaching and learning materials. The situation of the targeted schools compelled the learners and teachers to adopt to traditional teaching methods that restricted them to verbal teaching and learning process.
Implementation
The targeted schools were identified and selected with the support of elders, religious leaders and Ministry of Education (MoE) South West State. The teaching and learning materials included teaching guide books, chalks, marker pens, exercise books and pens for learners.
Degsuf Fundation procured the teaching and learning materials locally in Baidoa through competitive bidding process where the tenders were advertised at the notice board of the organization offices in Baidoa as well as through local FM radio stations. The prospective bidders submitted their quotations that were analyzed by Degsuf Fundation’s (DF) tender committee and the winning bidder waas selected. The project was closely monitored by DF’s project staff supported by stakeholders (elders, religious leaders and South West MoE officials that ensured effective implementation till completion.
Achievements
A total of 5 schools in received a consignment of teaching and learning materials included teaching guide books, chalks, marker pens, exercise books and pens for learners that significantly improved teaching and learning conditions in the mentioned schools.
Challenges
- There are other challenges such as dilapidated nature of classrooms that ought to be prioritized for upcoming funding since they affect learning activities despite a few improvements by the projects.
- Insecurity owing to presence of Alshabab fighters in the outskirts of Baidoa town that are against the curriculum adopted by the schools thus posing a threat to both learners and teachers.
Recommendations
- There is need to further improve learning conditions in the project targeted schools through rehabilitation of classroos and construction of new gender sensitive latrines fixed with hand washing facilities and establishment of water points at the schools.
- There is need to lift teachers morale by providing them with monthly incentives.
- There is strong need to increase security at the schools in Baidoa to avert possible attack by insurgent group members that are against the schools curriculum
